Kampala Uganda
I am just so excited to write this blog! This mission trip was by far the most inspiring trip I have been on. I saw spiritual and leadership growth within myself and the people I was able to engage with. This means it’s going to be one of the harder blogs for me to write as well just because so much happened.
So let’s begin……
The day has arrived for us (Hylton & Boby) to head to Uganda where we were going to be based in Kampala in an apartment that Hylton had stayed at before called Upperroom. It was an early start for me. I had to go fetch Jamie (my better half) and then head to Hylton’s house to pick everyone up before heading to the airport. Upon arrival at the airport, we quickly checked our bags in and then headed through customs to get a quick bite to eat before the flight. I don’t have anything to say about the flight as those who know me well know if I’m not manning the vehicle I will sleep the whole way.
After the flight, we were greeted by Pastor Raphael who Hylton knew well from past mission trips. He gave up his Friday afternoon to come fetch us and drop us at our apartment. Those who have been to Uganda know you get nowhere fast on those roads but before we knew it we were at our apartment. We spent the evening just unpacking our things and listening to worship music before going to bed.

Saturday Day 2
The morning was put aside for us to just see what all we needed to get for the apartment and just settle into the place. We were also expecting Victoria a South African lady who ended up moving to Uganda and now has her own show on one of the local radios in Uganda.
Later that morning Victoria arrived with this incredible spread of pastries even before we had time to go to the shops. So Hylton and myself quickly headed out to get Sim cards and groceries. So we shot downstairs and jumped onto a boudas (motorcycle taxi) and headed down the road. This was my first time ever on a motorcycle. All that was going through my head was “thank goodness my mother isn’t here” but I was so excited.
After the grocery shopping I sat down with Victoria, Boby and Hylton and just chatted for the morning as we had a wedding we were going to attend that afternoon. I’m not really a wedding Go-er so it was different for me as it was also completely different to weddings I knew, let alone not even knowing the bride and groom. This however didn’t stop the hosts from making us feel at home and fed us till we couldn’t eat any more food and get a taste of the amazing local food again, matoke and chapatis!!
Today was going to be our first Church service as Kingdom Revealed ministry and I was told I must share something that God puts on my heart with the church.
The church wasn’t a very big one and was based in Kampala. They were still building the church meaning we were half inside and half outside the church.
Today I felt as if I needed to share more on what we had discussed at the last Ugroup about still chasing God over the December period. In summary of what I shared
Let us use this time not to only fill our cups but let them overflow into our family’s, our work places and into the people around us.
“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.”
1 CORINTHIANS 15:58
While when Hylton shared about surrendering to God in summary..
There’s no bigger motivator than God Himself. Let God be the one to inspire you to try your best
So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
Galatians 6:9 NLT

Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.
Galatians 6:10 NLT
God loves you
He knows you
He made us
Live a life of surrender
God wants to consume our lives and conform us to a life with God
Philippines 2 (3-5 )
After the service we had to meet up with some of the kids as one of them was celebrating their birthday and wanted us to pray for him. On the way, we stopped to get some lunch quickly at a medaterian restaurant where the food was absolutely amazing and I had my first African tea!! This tea has now become one of my favourite teas. It’s a tea where the milk has been brewed with ginger and tea so no water. After that, the bill had been paid which was accompanied by slices of watermelon instead of Sweets. Nothing beats Ugandan fruit.
Upon arriving at the party it was straight to dancing with the kids from the church and praying for the little guy for protection and guidance from God. This was my first time laying hands on someone in a small group. Hearing Hylton pray for someone so young showed me how to without actually showing me.
Day 4- 7
The next few days we joined YWAM the school of encounter. Hylton was going to be talking about growing in intimacy with God. Boby and I knew we were going to share at some point and just be there for guidance and share our journey with God with the people at the school but till then we were privileged to sit in on the teachings and join the practical’s. I’ll try to summarise the day’s teachings and what I took from them.
Day 4
Journey of Intimacy
When we share anything about the gospel Let the world plunge into our stomachs and it will come out our mouths covered in Love and grace. By doing this we let the world become flesh rather than just a thought in our heads. This came down to an example Hylton gave on the day; If I had to give you a book about my wife. Who would know her better? You who only read the book or me who lives with here? This implied the more we live in the presence of the Holy Spirit the better we start to know God. He won’t just sit and watch you God is longing for a relationship with you.
“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life. John 5:39-40 NLT
At the end of the day we did a soaking meeting
What is a soaking meeting? This is where we put on worship and just prayed in the presence of God. Time ran away with me here it felt like it was 5min but from what I remember it was around 40min – 1hr of soaking. I found myself in all kinds of emotions during this time and an overwhelming sense of comfort.

Day 5
Day 5 of YWAM started with a very Powerful worship which afterward you could just feel the presence of God in the room. I had to pair up with someone and we took turns to just pray in tungs for each other then your partner had to just say how he felt afterward, and what did he experience. Then swap roles. In today’s teaching, I learnt that by being in the presence of the Holy Spirit you will become fruitful as God wants you to be fruitful not only go your church but for everyone to see and feel the presence of God when you are around. A line that stuck with me was “Your public ministry is only as good as your private devotion.”
We then went into our first soaking meeting. of 2 planned for the day. In the first session, we were to ask God how do you see us. I got a very clear image which I will try fit into the blog as an image with my very limited drawing skills. I just saw a man carrying a lamp that was shinning super bright with people of all ethnicity and ages following him towards what looked like a church.
In the second session of the day we were encouraged to ask for more details on what we saw and to share if God put anything on our hearts. During the meeting I had Natalie the owner of Ywam Kampala prophecy over me. What she saw
Axe: God was going to give me 3 words that was going to be able to break numb hearts & chains
Honey: It wasn’t going to come across hard but will be sweet like honey and people would feel safe and comfort with me.
Scares: She could see me going to places not a lot of people would go to (remote areas) It will be as a delight and as a legacy. God almost instantly put something on my heart to share with both Hyton and Boby and hearing later in the evening from Boby that what I had prophesied over here was said to her by 2 other people after me in a different way. Where the other 2 people were Victoria an experienced and well know prophet and Natalie. This was so reassuring for me to hear as we all have our doubts at first.
Day 6
Today started with Matthew one of the students coming to me and just saying thank you. I said to him for what dude? Hylton is the one teaching here you must thank him. I’m learning from you guys almost as much as I’m learning from him. I should be the one thanking you. Matthew replied saying John! Thank you don’t need to do anything you just have this strong séance of peace and comfort on you and I can see how strong your anointing is on you . II see Jesus living in you. These was a lot to swallow for me as I never try do something for recognition and was weird being told thank you for basically doing nothing. So I just said thank you to him but just so you know it isn’t me .Its God doing it. We then jumped straight into worship again before Hyltons teaching. From the days teaching I learnt that you must always give what you got and let God add to what you already have but, don’t settle for what you have now strive for more. God will never speak a word and not act on it. You might not understand what God is doing but he does he has put you in that situation. You not someone else. Your only limitation to is what you put on God. He won’t push himself onto you, you have to surrender to him. This is where Hylton brought out different size containers and asked which containers are you going to God with to receive a small , medium or large one? How far will you allow God to function in your life?

Day 7
Today was our last day with YWAM and Boby and I had to share on what we had learnt and our path with God. Here are my notes from my sermon.
Over the week we have learnt about Intimacy with God. Now it’s time to use the knowledge we have. I have felt parts of this serman throughout the week and shared some of it with some of you already. So bear with me as I’ve tried to get all of this into one serman that would make some sort of sense as God had put a lot my heart.
Never underestimate the power of prayer & being in the presence of God.
I saw my first miracle at 15 years old and it took an ex-convicts prayer here in Uganda to bring me back to Christ.
Now is the time to step out in aggressive faith not just step out in faith but in aggressive faith.
Be the person God has called you to be. Don’t rob the world of the person you are. We have all been put here not for a reason but for a purpose.
We must trust in God as he won’t put us in a place where he doesn’t want us to be. So start Looking for Jesus in every situation pray, ask for guidance don’t doubt yourself remember the devil also has dominion on earth.
When you here God don’t rob that person of God’s voice speaking through you.
Step out! STEP OUT not only in faith but aggressive faith.
GIVE WHAT YOU GOT!! Let the lord add to what you have. This doesn’t mean settling for what you have but working on what talents you already have and trusting God will do the rest.
We should be excited and waiting in anticipation for situations that produce growth! Growth happens in situations where we feel we are not ready but I’m here to tell you God will equip you. He has called you to that situation no? So why would he abandon you?
I hear the line why me? So often but why not me? God has called us all here. Every moment God has already known the outcome. So let us step out with aggressive faith.
Don’t neglect your private space with God.
Listen ,dig in, enjoy it strap in because it’s going to be a bumpy ride but nothing we cannot handle with God by our side. Chase God whole heartily as his love never fails
So from here let us step out as the youth of the world and be the joy ,the peace and the light
In every situation. Carry that flame in your heart and let our anointing overflow into the lives around us. Let our words speak life into dry bones. Let our flames light those around us.
Leave you with this scripture
And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.
Philippians 1:6 NLT
This evening we had dinner planned with Victoria and her friend. Where Vic was cooking up a storm in the kitchen the whole afternoon. After an amazing meal! The best by far the whole time in Uganda. Hylton and Victoria started prophesying over us. It was so comforting to hear what God was telling me and what he has in store for me. How he was going to function in my life and reassure me that I was here for a very specific purpose.

Day 8
Today we were off to Iganga east Uganda where we were going to spend one night and have a church service in one of the small little churches there. This area was a very strong Muslim hold on it so from the get-go I had a lot of respect for Moses (Founder of the church) for holding up his faith to build the church.
On arrival, I saw a church that had been built with Zinc and wooden rods. The roof was about 40% covered and the rest was open to the elements. Moses welcomed us to his church with a quick snack of bananas and bread with the good old African tea. Then we were off to start the service. I had on my heart to share about growing in Intimacy with God and putting full trust in him as no prayer will go unanswered.
When Hylton started to preach I pointed to the sky and told Boby it’s going to rain and boy did it come down. This was God’s sign to us that we needed to donate to the church to build the roof when we all got together while it was raining to gather funds for the roof as soon as the money changed hands from the missionaries to Moses 5 min later it stopped raining and Hylton could continue.
We spent the night at the Hotel Continental. Let me just say it was an interesting one ha-ha but a bed and a roof over our heads was all we needed. One of the pastors had to ask for new bedding as the bedding was dirty then later that evening Boby and I had a laugh together when I got a message from her saying “ do you have water?”
“Yeah but just cold water. Do you have a shower?”
I asked her if she had a shower because my bathroom was the shower. You can see in the photo of the bathroom. There was a hand shower and tap then the drain was all the way by the toilet. When I went to her room to see if I could turn the shower on, she had something completely different. She had this massive fancy shower thing with like 7 different shower heads. I asked her if the hotel manager could not turn it on ? and they couldn’t. They were going to bring a JoJo can to shower. We died of laughter knowing there was nothing we can do. In the end, we figured out how to turn the shower on but it was already late and the lady from reception was on her way with the JoJo can.
Day 9
We headed to a place called Toro for a wedding again. We had realized over the past few days that in Africa if a wedding is meant to start at 9:00 it will only start around 12:00. So we packed our bags and headed to the wedding. On the way to the wedding, I was amazed at the natural beauty of Uganda driving past the rice fields. When we got close to the church things became interesting as the road surface became off-road almost 4by4 kind of terrain. Boby and I were in a E class Benz! The driver even asked do you think we will make it? But really that was a question that only had one answer because we couldn’t reverse. So we went on the car started sliding sideways because of the mud but we made it through. About 100m from the church sirens started going off in the car but the driver didn’t seem to be phased by them so Boby and I were cool.
We arrived at John Baptist church in one piece. Boby and I started chatting with the other guests at the wedding while Hylton and the other pastors went to chat in one of the rooms. Boby and I ended up getting quite a few photos of everyone and were able to share them with guests before the service started.
It was the start of the service and I had no clue what to expect this time. In summary I couldn’t help but be amazed by the pastor running the ceremony. The bride and groom had to hug mid-ceremony not too sure why but yes. Then the groom had to inspect the bride for any crooked teeth or bruises etc. When I saw the groom peeking under the vail I was shocked but, who are we to judge? We could follow the whole ceremony as it was all written on the pamphlet word for word but when it came to the service we had no clue what time we were going to get out as we had a 6hr drive ahead of us that day back to Kampala. 3hrs later we were done at the church and only had the reception left.
for us all to eat.

On arrival at the reception, I was taken aback on how many people were there. Some were going to eat as there were sitting at tables well others were given seats so they could just attend. I’m amazed at how big the weddings are as I’m one who would want a very intimate wedding with minimal people, only loved ones, family members and close friends not everyone including complete strangers. The hosts were aware of us needing to leave the latest at 4pm so they opened up their house to us and gave us a quick lunch. As we were leaving we saw the newlyweds arriving with huge smiles on their faces. We started our journey home when we had a flat tire and had to change it as quickly as we could as it was starting to get dark. A young gentleman jumped off a bouda and did all the work for us within 20min we were on the move again. Almost as good as F1 guys I would say. We pulled into the house just before 10pm . Boby went out of her way to make toast and boiled eggs
Today was our last full day in Uganda and we had 2 service back to back in the morning at Pastor Sam’s church (Blessed Christian church) . I will attach the first service as they had a live stream running for the first service but not the second one. The only thing I need to mention is that near the end of the service. Hylton turned to me and said, “ here go anywhere you need to and find a 5L bottle of water”. So I ran up and down the streets looking for a 5L bottle of water with no avail. So I ended up getting 5 1.5L waters. Brought them to Hylton and he said thanks we will need it in the next service. Here I thought we were going to be washing peoples feet but boy was I wrong.
The next service started and I was taken back by how the holy spirit was flowing through Hylton. I had never seen it on that level before. Boby and I had to hold up glasses of water where mine was full and hers was empty. The message for this part was to come expecting with our glasses full not empty. When our glasses are full when we stumble or get bumped it is still full but it also gets spilled onto the people around us. The service continued and Hylton continued to say let the blessing of God be poured out on you and went with glass to 2 different people and emptied the glass on them. When he came back to the stage Boby and I were already sitting in our seats. He gave me another full glass and said “ we can even pass on the blessings of god” then before I knew it I had a whole bucket of water poured over me and an alter call was made for everyone who wanted to be revived in the holy spirt and chains to be broken to come to the front. That’s where all the pastors , Hylton , Boby and myself were given bottles of water to pour over the people and pray for them. EVERYONE came to the front. This was one of the most powerful services I have been blessed to be a part of. I was so overwhelmed at how so many people of all ages were wanting to chase God. Seeing eyes of hope. Purified souls .
At the end of the service, we had lunch at Pastor Sam’s house. This is where even more questions came to my head. I started chatting with Francis and we overheard the ladies talking about swimming and long story short. I was in Uganda last year with Sam Childrs who fought against Kony and the LRA. Where still many of the orphans in his program are victims of Kony. Francois casually said “ when we had to cross the Nile river, they would send the strongest swimmer to tie a rope to the tree so the rest of us could hold onto the rope and cross. If someone was struggling next to you , you had to help him otherwise you were all going to drown. Then another strong swimmer would bring the rope back.” So I asked him why are you crossing the Nile river? He said we had to I was a part of the LRA (as a child soldier). I asked him do you know Sam Childrs? Ended up he was one of the kids that were saved by Sam many years ago.
I’m still trying to figure out why God put us in the same room not 1ce not 2ce but 3 times. Why was this encounter so important? As the conversation went on Francis told me how he had set up churches in the North of Uganda for the youth and would love me to come to minister to them next year. Just let him know if its Gods plan I will be there. Send me all the details so long and we will all pray about it.

Day 11
It was the end of the Missions trip and all we had to do this morning was pack our bags and head to Pastor Raphael’s’ house as I said I would take photos of the products they wanted to sell. So after a quick photoshoot of some of the coolest African bags, art, ornaments and more we were off to the airport. At the airport, Hylton brought to our attention to one of the biggest problems in Uganda which was Human trafficking where educated Ugandan women were given training and promised amazing jobs in the middle east but on arrival, they just disappeared. Once he had explained it we could only assume the 20-30 Females all dressed in the same uniform boarding a Qatar plane were possibly a part of that. I kept asking why is no one doing anything about this. Why can’t we stop them, but what can we do here at the airport? They believe they going there on this amazing opportunity and have been told by their government about what’s happening but they have now chosen to go. All we can do is pray for God to intervene in this.
Summary
In summary of the trip, I had the most incredible time with the mission team. It just felt like we were family and all shared the same passion. There was never a time where I felt like “alright this is enough lets go home” or felt as if I had learned all I could learn. Every day was an opportunity to grow and share with the people around us. So many new opportunities were given to me, I met such incredible people and I got thrown in the deep end but came out swimming like Chad le cloe. I would encourage any other Missionary to join Kingdom Relevel for a mission trip even if it’s a local one in South Africa. You will definitely grow spiritually. Thank you to everyone for changing my life and letting me grow in intimacy with God.!!
